UU Church of Wakefield

Evensong is a religious enrichment group where we gather to consider topics of spiritual importance. Gatherings are held one Wednesday evening per month at 7:30 pm. All are invited to attend, we only ask that you arrive promptly.

In Evensong we not only share from our hearts but also covenant to practice deep listening. Listening solidifies relationships and is a foundation for community. Listening with undivided attention and without interruption moves us beyond differences and shows deep respect. We focus on paying attention to people, "hearing" them into a deeper sense of their own humanness and wholeness and into the community. Evensong offers people the opportunity to listen, to speak of what matters to them, and to be with one another in respectful ways.

April 16: Gossip

Gossip is something we all have experience of. It is a form of communication that has been embraced by our culture, starting in our schoolyards and continuing on to our senior years. Since it is so prevalent in our interactions it must serve a purpose or role. Yet it often causes harm or pain in its execution. As such we openly disparage and proclaim to reject the practice of gossiping. Thus far we do not seem to have found methods to stop gossip or transform it into healthy communication.

• Why do we gossip? What purpose does it serve?
• Is all gossip negative? Can we gossip in a positive way?
• Is gossip something that we can stop? What could we replace it with?
• Is gossip a necessary part of human interactions?

May 28: Beauty

Beauty – whether in nature, crafted by human hands, or simply identified by human senses – awakes a range of feelings in us - gratitude, peace, inspiration. Other feelings can arise as well: anxiety, regret, or sorrow that some other person is not with us.

• What complex of feelings, meditations, or wisdom do different kinds of beauty evoke in you?
• Are there forms of beauty you can rely on for solace?
• Are there themes you associate with beauty?
